Hyaluronic acid: myths and facts

Hyaluronic acid is the most widely used dermal filler in the world — and one of the treatments surrounded by the most myths. Here we clear up the five we hear most often in consultation.

Myth 1: "It will change my face"

False, when the treatment is properly indicated. Well-placed hyaluronic acid restores lost volume and harmonises existing proportions; it does not create new features. The artificial results seen on social media usually come from overcorrection or poor indication — exactly what a conservative medical approach avoids.

Myth 2: "It's irreversible"

False. It is one of the few reversible aesthetic treatments: hyaluronidase dissolves the product if ever needed. That safety net is one reason for its excellent safety profile in medical hands.

Myth 3: "When you stop, your skin ends up worse"

False. The product resorbs gradually and the skin returns to its previous state; it does not "sag" because you had filler. In fact, hyaluronic acid attracts water and mildly stimulates collagen, leaving a residual hydrating effect.

Myth 4: "It's a painful treatment"

Most modern formulas include lidocaine, and we work with topical anaesthesia and a slow injection technique. Discomfort is usually minimal and the procedure takes 15 to 40 minutes.

Myth 5: "Anyone can inject it"

Legally and clinically — no. It is a medical act requiring deep anatomical knowledge: real vascular risk zones exist. At Lumina Vita, injections are performed exclusively by licensed doctors, after an assessment consultation and with informed consent.

In short

Properly indicated, properly dosed and in medical hands, hyaluronic acid is a safe, reversible, natural-looking treatment. The key is not the product — it is the judgement of the person applying it.
